Editorial Review

Well-designed with lots of terrific detail, Learning Resources' Calculator Cash Register completely satisfies a young child's hunger to play with bills, coins, cash drawers, and big numbers. The chiming cash register features a built-in solar calculator as its keypad, thus allowing kids to act as bankers, shopkeepers, and accountants all at once. A large cash drawer holds life-sized bills in four denominations (1, 5, 10, and 20), and four coin holders make room for embossed plastic pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. There is even a credit card slot that dings when you correctly slide the faux VISA card through it.A suggested-activities booklet is included. Requires a 1.5V button cell battery (included) to make the chiming noise. No assembly required. Winner of awards from Dr. Toy, FamilyFun Magazine, and Oppenheim Toy Portfolio. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's the most popular toy at my house!
This cash register is a favorite at my house! We often have children from ages two to six visiting, and this is the first toy that many of them go to. The calculator makes beeping noises that the kids enjoy, and the cash drawer opens and closes with a satisfying click. I've enjoyed teaching my son the value of money and how to use a calculator with this toy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't Live Without It
We were at a friends house last night and she had this toy for her 3 year old son. My 2 year old daughter could not stop playing with it. She simply loved opening the drawer and handing out the money to each person in the room. She would then collect the money and put it back. This activity kept her busy for an hour and it would have been longer except for the fact we needed to leave. I have bought her other cash register toys but none have been as realistic or kept her interest as long as this one did. I am buying one for her now and can only hope that she loves it as much as she did last night.

This is the funniest toy ever
When I got this toy i played with it for such along time and still do. You only spend $29.99 on it and it is money well spent. You make the right choice if you get this toy. The age group i would say is probably 5-whenever. Let me tell you parents what when my mom and dad got this for me i lovedit and it made me happy for so long.Three words for this toy.
MONEY WELL SPENT!!!!!!!!! FUN
so you should get this toy. KNOW dont think twice get it...NOW
dont forget get the scanner and bar codes* that go with it.

A preschool favorite
I'm buying this toy for my son's 3rd birthday because he makes a beeline to it everytime we go to our parent-child preschool class. He usually sets up a toy phone nearby, too. I get to be the customer and bring a basket of toy food to him which he "scans" on the notepad area. It's nice when toys leave something to the imagination. He loves the play bills and coins and pretending to make change. I believe that this toy will grow with my child and still be fun for him in a few years.

I figure that if this toy has survived daily use by multiple 2-4 year olds, it will survive around our house. If it doesn't, then I will update this posting!!!

hits money learning right on the head
I bought this for my daughter five years ago when she turned 4... it is still a household favorite. The design is good and it has held up well despite its being knocked around a fair amount.

The display is large and easy to read. The play money, which was one of my primary concerns, is realistically sized and marked. There is plenty of it to play with and make change too. The credit card is a nice touch which slides into a slot with a beep.

The sticky note space isn't as useful or cool as I thought it could have been, but I think sticky notes tend to just get ripped off of the pad and spread across the room by most children.

Now that my daughter is older, she still plays with it as well as putting it to use while running her punch & shaved ice stand in the summer. I feel like this was a good purchase and I would recommend it as a sturdy playset with high educational potential. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This pretend cash register may seem like all fun and games to your little one but is actually teaching him coin and money values, coin identification, numbers, counting, and quantities. The register comes with a stack of play pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters, all encased in easy-to-handle plastic chips. In explore mode, the smart coin reader on the register identifies all coins as kids drop them in, teaching their name and value. Four additional price tags represent larger monetary values and as kids slide price tags over the flashing scanner or drop coins in the register, they learn how to add values together and make totals. Kids can also set the register to price check mode to play a fun game that teaches number identification. Final checkout reinforces numbers, coins, and coin combinations once again and plays a fun song when the register opens. Throughout playtime, kids will receive encouragement and requests to keep playing from the LeapFrog's friendly voice. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

Fun toy but hard keep up with!
I love this toy becouse it teaches my boys about money. The only thing I don't like is that the money always gets stuck in the slot. It does have an opening to get the money out, but you need a screwdriver. So every time they put the money in to quickly after another, I have to go find my hand screwdriver. My boys have a great time playing with this cash register. If this one ever broke, I would go out and by another one. It is the best on I have found.

The best cash register yet!
Ever since my kids got this for Christmas last year they have not quite playing with it. Plus I think it's great because it interacts with out leap frog shopping cart. my kids play for hours with it, a great toy!

Excellent for fun and learning!
We gave this cash register to our 4 yr. old and 2 yr. old last Christmas. It has since been used for countless games of "Store" and is still working and looking great (5 months later). As a parent and home educator, my favorite feature is the coins, which are made to resemble actual coins, but are surrounded by color-coded plastic rings to help children learn to identify the correct amounts. The price scanners are another neat, unique function, as the kids can customize price amounts for their store "merchandise."

My children remain interested in this toy, partially because cash registers just add to the fun of pretend play, and perhaps partially due to the four different modes of play. I appreciate the volume control button, too!

I can understand the complaint about coins getting stuck, but we have never had any real problems with this. They really only get jammed if a child loads too many coins in the slot at once. Our children have learned to remove the coins after inserting just a few.

Bottom line: I highly recommend this toy if you are looking for a high-quality cash register, or just an exciting means of learning math concepts.

Jams unacceptably
We have most of leapfrog's other products, they are usually great. This toy, however, has a product defect. The problem is that the coins jam both internally (there is an afterthought "door" secured with a screw to access internal jams) as well as externally in the coin return tray. When I say "Jams" I mean "Jams almost immediately". As in "within 30 seconds of play". To remove the jam you need a screwdriver and knife - not what you want you use around toddlers. Children cannot "unjam the toy". Unacceptable. If they can fix this issue, it will be an outstanding toy as it is compatible with their shopping cart (highly recommended) as well. It is one of the favorites at playgroup, which is a contributing factor to it jamming (several hands playing with it at once).

After speaking with Leapfrog, customers that own this toy and are experiencing jamming should register their product with leapfrog so that they may be contacted when a fix is available for the problem. Leapfrog is aware of the issue.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Leapfrog product ever
We have most of leapfrog's other products, most are great. This toy, however is awful. The main problem is that the coins jam both internally (there is an afterthought "door" secured with a screw to access internal jams) as well as externally in the coin return tray. When I say "Jams" I mean "Jams almost immediately". As in "within 30 seconds of play". To remove the jam you need a screwdriver and knife - not what you want you use around toddlers. Children cannot "unjam the toy". Totally unacceptable.

This problem brought to light a reprehensible policy of Leapfrog - they won't take any returns or exchanges for non-manufacturing defects. This was bought as a gift for my daughter, it was purchased in a distant city, and we cannot return the product to the retailer.

Rotten toy, and a rotten custom service attitude - last time I will give this company my money... ... Read more

Cute but hard to play and Annoying
My daughter really liked her new grill, she was very excited to see her new toy as she really likes cooking and kitchen toys. The idea of getting this kind of toy was good but this toy was disappointing....the eyes and the mounth moves as the grill talks but when it moves it creates NOISE from moving aside from the annoying talking which never ends. I really like the idea of talking grill, keeps the kid from getting bored but it should only talk when a button is pressed or something, this thing scared me in the middle of the night when it started to talk, I almost called cops. plastic food is had to flip...I agree with the rest of the reviews on this page and would not recomend spending $$$$ on this

Ashley's not so happy
My daughter is 2 1/2 an tomboy at heart. This grill scared her. I thought that it was a lot of fun to play with but the constant talking and shaking made her not want to come near the thing. What a shame. This is a toy that should be tested out in the store first.

An good toy, but for younger babies.
The talking grill was given to our ten month old boy. He loves it. He gets excited when it talks, and he likes to kneel at the grill, grabbing onto the "food", which ends up in his mouth. We wish it had a shut-off button and it does tend to go off when no one is around, but since he loves it, we live with it. I could see how older children would get tired of it, but it's great for my ten month old.

Never Again
The thing doesn't SHUT UP!! It starts talking when a dust particle floats in front of it. She even got so annoyed with it that we finally had to take the batteries out! The lid is so hard to get back on. The accessories are cute but now worth the $35 I paid for it!

Don't buy it!
I wish I had read the reviews on this before I bought it. The lid comes off too easily and is difficult to get back on. The food is too hard for little ones to scoop up, and it starts talking when the wind blows or someone walks by it. Very annoying! ... Read more

25 Month Old Loves It
My 25 month old daughter loves this toy. If you are a parent who plays with their child, you will too. This is a poor choice of toy to just hand to a child; it requires interactive play, at least initially. The case is a bit fragile, though. A small purse/bag works just as well as a substitute doctor's bag.

Good set
My twins just received this for their second birthday. So far, it's a huge hit! We are not having any problem fitting all the items into the bag. The blood pressure cuff doesn't stay together too well, but everything else is great. The boys have had great fun "fixing" both of their parents and themselves.

It's a pretty basic set, but it seems great for their age and skill levels. If you have an "under 3" and are looking for a medical playset, I'd definitely recommend this one.

interesting search engine
I am interested in the Fisher-Price Medical Kit that ToysRUs sells, but searches under "Medical Kit" or "medical" or "kit" only send you to this more expensive less interesting toy. The Fisher-Price web site sends you to this web site but once you are here you are encoraged to buy something else. Interesting search engine. The stars are for review submission purposes only.

2.5 Year old loves it but falling apart
Purchased in part b/c reviews suggested it was the sturdiest of the bunch. Neighbor has the alternative blue case and accessories.

My 2.5YO daughter loves this but cramming all the pieces into the case has finally broken the latch beyond repair. The toys are reasonably sturdy but the stethoscope doesn't fit ears well-she just wears it around her neck. (The other child's doctor kit actually transmits some amplified sounds but no electronic sound effects of coughing and thump-thump). The blood pressure unit doesn't go or stay on very well and falls apart. (But after quite a few tries re-assembling it has become part of the game).

Double the price but not double the quality of the blue one.

Great Kit!
My 3 yr old son just loves this kit, I shopped around for one with the best gadgets, and this one is very nice. The stethoscope is a little hard to keep on the ears, and it has to be packed just so to get the case to close, but I think it is definately a good purchase. ... Read more

Dinner's on! A cute toy for budding chefs, this make-believe kitchen lets preschoolers pretend they're cooking along with mom and dad, and features a couple of chatty appliances: Bake the Oven, Zap the Microwave, and Mixy the Blender. Pressing the red buttons on the stovetop makes them talk ("Hey, Mixy--what's shakin'?" "I am!"), while Bake the Oven's eyes and mouth move. There's also a whole spread of plastic food and utensils, including a freshly baked pie, a slice of pizza, a sauté pan, and a pair of sunny-side-up eggs. Other elements include a tick-tocking timer and two attachable shelves. Included are three AA batteries. --Andy Boynton ... Read more

Broke after 3 months
My 11 month old received this phone as a gift, and he loved it, but it broke 3 months later -- it no longer makes any noise. I contacted the company, and their only response to my e-mail was an automated reply telling me where to buy their products. I'm very disappointed with this product and this company and do not plan on purchasing from them again.

Love this cell phone
My 11-month old daughter loves her father's cell phone, so we bought this mobile phone for her for Christmas. At 11 months nothing really holds her attention for very long, but she really liked pushing the buttons, making the wheel spin by sliding the ladybug, and she really loves opening and closing it. She likes hearing the short recorded messages we make. I've read reviews of other toy phones that said the sound effects were too quiet to hear, which is not a problem with this phone. The sounds are clear and loud enough to hear without being too loud. Overall my daughter likes this toy and it keeps her away from her Daddy's cell phone.

Just like daddy's
This is a great little toy cell phone. It has a clip on the back, just like daddy's, so my little guy can clip his on just like his daddy does. It rings and talks when the buttons are pressed and you can record and playback a message on it. My little guy loves to record "I love you Mommy and Daddy" on it and play it back for us repeatedly. He also loves that it is a flip phone, again, just like daddy's. ... Read more

A Special Toy For A Special Boy!
My son has autism, so I am constantly on the lookout for toys that will help him in everyday task. The phone is FANTASTIC! In only two day, he got the hang of the phone and learned his home phone number! The kicker was for praise, he heard mommy's voice saying, he got it right! No mechanical, strange voices! Good Job! Great Product!

Gets loads of play! Kids of all ages love this.
This toy can be used by babies and toddlers and up. Younger kids can use it simply as a pretend phone. When certain buttons are pressed there is a dial tone sound, a ringing sound, and a "busy signal" sound. My youngest was one year old when he began playing with this, randomly pressing buttons, listening, and really pretending to talk.

Older kids (5 or maybe 4) can use this as a teaching tool, with the parent. As described by the manufacturer (above) this has the capability to program in numbers, record your voice, and practice calling 911 or practice calling other important phone numbers.

So far we've only used the toy to play with during imaginative play. My kids have played with it so much that it is worth the cost. Kids who visit for playdates also gravitate to this toy and love to play with it. I highly recommend this as a great toy for pretend play.

Also great from this manufacturer is the pretend cash register. ... Read more

Editorial Review

There are few toys quite as fun as that old standby, the pretend cash register. But as anyone who’s been in a grocery store in the last few years can tell you, the technology has changed a little bit. Gone are the days of punching in each individual price by hand, replaced by high-tech scanners and coding. Fortunately, Barbie rolls with the punches, unveiling this souped-up shopping cart, brimming with products, and scanning system for any kid looking to play grocery store in a more realistic way. 24 pieces of pretend food are included, with a heavy emphasis on snacks like popsicles and cookies, along with a small scanning station. Other shopping items, featured in a flip-book catalog, are also able to be scanned using a special electronic pen. This kit may lack the satisfying clunking sounds of the old fashioned toy cash register, and the American Express co-branding seems to be a bit of unfortunate marketing that does little to enhance the fun, but the use of modern shopping gadgetry will likely be a hit with kids. --Charlie Williams ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Daughter Loves It
My daughter received it over a six months ago and still uses it regularly. She plays with the microphone and really uses the cd part for all her music and learning cds. I was worried it would be too complicated for a five year old but overall, she had no trouble. I would recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this toy!
My son is 20 months old and when we got him this Vacuum a few months ago he was immediately drawn to it! He plays with it every day and wants to take it every where. The brush attachment did break off rather quickly but he loves it any way.

5-0 out of 5 stars great toy for toddlers
I got this for my daughter when she was one, and she has enjoyed it more as she's gotten older. It is very sturdy, and she loves the voice. It's a good present--at her 2nd birthday party, everyone was playing with it including the boys. I know what to buy as gifts for them now....

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Birthday present
I saw the reviews weren't that great for this toy, until I got to the last one in which they said the handle was fine and they must have fixed the problem. So I bought it to try for myself. I noticed an extra assembly notice in the box dated in 2004 with the instructions stating information specifically about the handle. It seems that they have fixed the problem and it does stay on. My daughter loves it! Once she opened it, she didn't even want to open her other gifts!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Sturdy Toy
I just purchased this for my 11 month old who loves my vacuum cleaner. he loves to pretend to vacuum like mommy and it is so cute. It is very sturdy and I have never had the problem of the handle falling off. Maybe they have fixed this problem?

Not so great!
My parent's bought this for my daughter for christmas. In the package it is pretty loud but when you took it out the packaging and pulled the tab it got so quiet that you can barely even hear it. Also about 3 weeks after she got this, the flip part on the phone broke right off!

Absolutely ridiculous!
The fact that the volume is barely audible when you take it out of the package is so ridiculous!!!! Don't waste your time and money!

Total false advertising!
I too bought this phone, and when I took the packaging off, the volume was barely audible! the instructions inside said that was not an error, that is how it is supposed to be. Well then maybe they shouldn't have it so the volume is so loud when it is in the packaging! Obviously, you need the volume up to sell the damn toy, why turn it down? My daughter rarely plays with this phone. I wouldn't recommend it, if not solely for the false advertising!

Agree the volume is too low
We stuck the tab back in and taped it in place so our daughter could hear it. Otherwise, it's a great toy.

Fasle Advertising
There is no indication prior to buying this toy that the volume will be turned down to nothing when it is taken out of the box. I can understand the Fisher Price people's concern for children's hearing but the volume doesn't need to be so low. We were very excited about getting the phone and looked forward to playing with it when we were still able to hear it! ... Read more
