Amazon.com Review The key word is simulation. There are no arcade trappings to be found here. Thepace is toned down to match the speed of the real sport, goals are infrequentand hard-won, and the offensive and defensive strategies come straight from thehockey textbooks. The graphics are excellent, and special note must be made ofthe phenomenal animation for everything from the players to the spinning puck(which flips end-over-end after particularly aggressive slap shots and careensrealistically off any object it encounters). Beginners will have an easy enoughtime warming up to the controls in the default mode, but much more depth isoffered by switching to the advanced control layout. Here, button combos makenearly any trick possible, from dekes and precise shot control to hooks and sidesteps. The more you put into the game, the more it rewards you, and the enhancedAI makes single-player games nearly as challenging as a multiplayer match. Everything from an exhibition mode to a full-blown career mode is offered, andplenty of options exist for adjusting penalties, toggling rules, and setting theoverall speed of the game. There's no way to turn it into an over-the-top arcadeexperience like NHL Hitz, but as the focus here is strictly onsimulation, that's not really a problem. As it stands, NHL 2K2 is amongthe best sports games ever released, and we can think of no more fitting swansong for the Dreamcast. --T. Byrl Baker Pros: Reviews (24)
In NHL 2K, even on 'all-star'-fast, you could skate circles around the opponent (Hey, I was the Sharks, they're not that great), do a one-timer and put the puck in. Again and again. If you try to skate circles around the opponent in 2K2, your back will be glued to the ice and you'll here something like "he must be wondering why he didn't hear the train coming." Trust me. The only real disappointment was the announcing. Different announcers than 2K, but they must read the same script as before. Only in this version, they emphasize the hits. A LOT. Maybe that's just because I keep hitting hard--or getting hit :-(. There is depth to the game--more coaching options, more puck handling and defense options. And don't forget about creating your own players. Nothing like scoring a goal with your last name on the jersey. Just DON'T CHECK my man. I would highly recommend this game if you love sports on the dreamcast and don't mind a challenge or getting bruised a little.

a nightmare!! Supposedly, they fixed a lot of the glitches on this years edition. After buying a very, veRY, VERY DISAPPOINTING Sega sports game (you all know what game I'm talking about), I hesitated on buying NFL2K1. It turned out that they have made another superior sports game! When Madden 2001 comes out next month for PSX2, they have some competition in store for them!!!
The graphics are suberb, online play against real people is a marvelous feature, one-on-one play with an opponent right in your own living room is seamless, and the challenge level is almost perfect. When I say the game is challenging, I mean it. This game is hard! By the time I'd finished one season on Rookie level, I won the Super Bowl in a 42-0 blowout. Too easy, by far, but useful for learning the controls. I quickly left it behind and moved on to Pro level. This was pretty hard for a while, but after a couple of seasons, it also got to be too easy and I moved up to All-Pro level. Several seasons later, I usually win, but I am still having to play my best to do so. Sometimes I swear the computer is cheating, but, on the whole, I'd rather it remained difficult than have it get too easy and become boring. And difficult it is. Very much so. The Franchise mode is also exceptional. I have rarely found myself drawn into such features before, but this game's franchise mode has me hooked. I'm just getting into my 2005 season and have spent countless hours tweaking my roster, juggling my needs so that I can strengthen a weak spot without creating another. Every draft season I have to carefully plan to fill in the gaps from retirements and to pick up the slack for aging players. During the course of a season, I have to trade and adjust. Fascinating stuff and it keeps on keeping me interested, long after most games would have started to bore me. So, having said all those wonderful things, why only four stars? Because the game has some flaws that could have easily been prevented. Some are merely annoying, like the tendency for the announcers to keep mentioning it every change of possession when a player gets hurt on a possession changing play (even half a game after he's back in the game). Others amount to majour causes of stress and broken controllers, most especially the random way that your players will stop dead in their tracks when you take control of them, instead of continuing to do what they should be doing (if the game always did this, you could adapt to it, but it only does it sometimes, and it almost always results in a big play for your opponent). Very frustrating. Another shortcoming is in the record-keeping area. Two actually. First, the game is sporadic about actually recording new records. Usually it's fine but sometimes it just seems to forget (I am still upset that my conference championship-winning 60 yard field goal is not listed in the Longest Field Goal record book). Second, there are only ten or so records kept and those only by name and the raw number of the record. Competition with my friends who play on my system for new records is a lot of the fun - and a wide variety of records the player can break, and information as to what player/team and at what skill level applied when they were set - have been standard features of competing products (i.e., Madden) for years, yet Sega dropped the ball (as it were). The commentary, however, is a vast improvement over the competition. Sure, I've heard most of their pithy little sayings dozens of times, but every now and then I still hear a new one. And even the most frequently repeated ones usually have that "real-time feel" since they often menrtion the player by name and the actual circumstances on the field where appropriate. Sega's made the most of the Dreamcast's processing power here and produced a definite improvement over, say, Madden's irritatingly canned comments. So, all in all, a great game, but one that could have benefited by a few more weeks of playtesting and debugging. Despite its flaws, I still play at least one game almost every day b/c I genuinely love this game. If you like electronic football, you owe it to yourself to give this game a try.
2K1 is very good, but is it better than Madden's series?

The game is the most fustrating game i've ever played. In what other game would your recievers fumble the ball when they are tackled mere inches from the End Zone (sometimes on a first down, sometimes when the game is on the line)? This happened to me at least 3 times in one game! Needless to say it resulted in 3 costly turnovers and I lost the game. The hardest part was the fact that the game was on the EASY level. I expect this kind of CHEAP play on the hardest setting but not on easy. The constant fumbling by players throughout the game is a SERIOUS TURN OFF especially for fans who just want to enjoy a good game. The random and FREQUENT fumbles made this game a worthless piece of junk. The game is also flooded with too many loading screens that get really old really fast when you just want to get into the action. Very poorly designed, Midway. If you still have a bad taste in your mouth from NBA Hoopz then AVOID this game. The graphics are on the same level and the announcer is the same. Do not waste your hard earned money on this poor game! Read the other reviews that warn of the fumbling problem and do not make the mistake I did! PLAY OR RENT BEFORE YOU BUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DO NOT GET IT! SPEND THE MONEY ON SOMETHING
I would expect that my credit card would have been credited the amount by now! PLEASE RESPOND. ... Read more

Being a huge fan of Tetris, I was pretty interested in picking up this title. With all the good reviews it received I figured it would be a sure hit. Actually, it isn't. From the poor graphics (very Nintendo-ish), to the irritating robotic voice-over (sound effects do NOT show off Dreamcast abilities), I soon found myself bored with building walls to hold in water. The weak graphics and sound might not be too bad if the interface was better (it is a puzzle game after all), but placing your walls in the position you want as they descend from the top of the screen is near impossible. The controls really are that bad. Try moving one slot over and you will usually end up moving way too far or moving the wrong way. And trust me, it's not poor hand-eye coordination on my part. My suggestion, you better rent this one before you buy or you may be kicking yourself for wasting your $$. I know I am. If you don't like it after playing a few times, most likely you aren't going to, and then, of course, it'll be too late.

Editorial Review The gridiron action is enhanced by the voices of the players. A safety who body-slams a wide receiver willstand over the writhing body and jeer, "You're in MY house, sucka!"A sacked quarterback may limpaway, wailing, "I think it's broken!"Even the game's announcers get in on it, gleefully pointing out thatyour star running back just got clobbered. So NFL Blitz 2000 is the perfect game to play with your buddies. It's fast, fierce, and quickly getseveryone talking trash and slinging taunts. Up to four people can play at once, two on each team (eachplayer needs their own controller). Fans of deep, realistic football strategy should check out NFL 2K. But fans of the kind of football foundin highlight reels will love NFL Blitz 2000. Reviews (15)
First downs are 30 yards, there are no penalties, there's no kickoff, and there is no realism involved as far as athletic ability of the players. For example, if you complete a pass from Young to Rice (remember, this is 2000!), and Rice has the open field, two defenders are actually able to catch up to Rice and tackle him. This is flat out ridiculous, even for an arcade game. Ditto Terrell Owens and Tim Brown, and I was able to stop other wideouts with linebackers just by squeezing the turbo button. The emphasis is obviously on bone-crushing tackles, but after an hour of play, the only really enjoyable aspect of this is the ability to cheap-shot the offensive players long after the ball is whistled dead. The field-goal kicking system is particularly vexing, as it was apparently designed by a chimp with ADD, and requires eight espresso-mochacchinos in order to maintain the twitch focus required to accurately split the uprights. Overall, I see this as a fun arcade game for younger kids not up to simulation-level gameplay, and guys/gals who just want to have fun beating each other's players up. Me, if I want to beat up some guy, I'll play Soul Calibur.

Editorial Review The clean graphics show some extremely well-detailed players, stadiums, fans, and even coaches. While the player animationsaren't quite smooth as glass (there are quite a few speed-ups andslowdowns), the players do move in a fairly realistic manner. When yousee the instant replay of your favorite power forward delivering amassive dunk, you'll cheer. To complement the visuals, Sega has addedplay-by-play and color commentary to document the on-screen action. While this does get a little repetitive, this feature ultimately addsto the atmosphere of realism. NBA 2K shows some trouble with controls. This is most apparentin handling loose balls. You'll cringe as you occasionally watch longpasses sail out of the court, resulting in mindless turnovers. This isespecially painful to watch when the Dreamcast can't complete passesto computer-controlled players. These stupid turnovers can, will, anddo affect a game's final score--and have even caused a few games to berestarted in disgust. On the positive side, NBA 2K contains anew finesse-based method of hitting foul shots that requires that yousqueeze the control triggers in near perfect synch. The create-a-player and coaching options make it relatively easy tolead your team from postseason TV watchers to championship ringowners. While the 2000 season's prettiest basketball game offers more thanjust the most delicious eye candy, there is still a lingering feelingthat NBA 2K could've been much better with alittle more fine-tuning. At the very least, while NBA 2K is recommended, it isanticipated that the successor NBA 2K1 will offer even morebackboard-breaking fun. --Mark Brooks Pros: Reviews (171)

Amazon.com Reviews (171)
The controls and play execution are solid and menu option selections are easy to access. Running the ball successfully can be frustrating at times, especially at first. Patience and technique will result in solid yardage gains over time with practice. Passing and kicking are very accurate and equally realistic. A variety of catches can be made ranging from over the shoulder, shoe string, and diving grabs which can all be utilized to bring the pigskin in for big yards. The biggest drawback is the play calling. If you play in 2 player mode, your opponent will be able to see the plays you call. The only way to avoid this is to use the VMU and have the plays appear on it's screen. Just make sure you memorize the plays because only the play name appears and not the patterns your players run. I have encountered some glitches with my NFL 2K that some may want to take note to. This has also happend to a friend of mine as well. Players 2, 3, and 4 may not be able to select options on the menu such as calling a timeout which can be VERY frustrating. Sega has responded to this via sega.com by suggesting that player 2, 3, and 4 use the analog controller and not the d-pad. Because this has not happend again since I found Sega's "solution", I can't confirm or deny that this is guaranteed to work all the time. Another glitch that I encountered was during season mode; my starting quarterback began the season with 23 interceptions (make note that not one of these were actually thrown). I have e-mailed Sega regarding this glitch and have yet to receive a response. All in all though, NFL 2K is a great game that is truly amazing to watch and very fun to play. It's nice to play a great football game where I don't have to hear Madden's constant jabbering after every play (don't get me wrong, EA Sports' Madden series is still my favorite). NFL 2K is a must buy for sports fanatics who own a Dreamcast system.

The controls are more complicated than necessary. For example, three separate buttons must be pressed to complete a pass, one to fade back, another to select a receiver, and finally another to catch the ball. You have very little time to do this even at the easiest level. Even if you keep backs in to block, you rarely have more than 2 seconds to complete a pass. Even bad rushing teams can sack the QB 10 times per game playing 5 minute quarters. This is not realistic, which is consistent with the rest of the game. Passing is also blind, since your perspective is from behind the QB, you rarely see the receivers and have no idea what the coverage is. Your completion success has little to do with these factors, which are critical in the real game. It's easy to complete passes once you get the knack of pushing the right buttons quickly, but there is little sense of accomplishment when your success or throwing has nothing to do with throwing to the open receiver or exploiting a weakness in the defense. In fact, the type of defense called seems to have no effect on the outcome of a given offensive play. You can stack the line against the run, completely plug the hole, and the computer running back will stay on his feet for 10 seconds, then break into the secondary for a long TD. This can happen with mediocre backs and excellent defenses. Conversely, the computer will routinely complete long passes into triple coverage and score long touchdown passes against a prevent defense. Despite the difficult and non-responsive controls, once you get the hang of passing, you'll throw one TD pass after another. Interceptions are few and far between. Ridiculously high scores are common even when playing 5 minute quarters. I tried to play a season with my favorite team, and gave up after two games because the gameplay was so unrealistic and irritating. Another annoying feature is if you want to switch players, you can only do so for one play at a time. Playing the Rams, I wanted to use Kurt Warner instead of Terry Green. The game allows you to switch them by formation, so if you haven't decided on a formation, it won't work if you happen to choose a different formation. After the play is completed, the game reverts to the default player setting. Extremely annoying. I gave it 1 star because that was the lowest rating possible. It deserves 0 stars. Sega's NFL2K is far far better.

Editorial Review While Tee Off does require some basic golf knowledge, it uses astandardized control scheme which even those who've never played video golf willbe able to pick up on right away. In addition to customizable difficulty levels,Tee Off offers various modes of play, including gate ball (think croquetin cyberspace) and world tour, which rewards players' high scores by "unlocking"new characters and equipment. Admittedly, Tee Off isn't for devotees of more simulation-oriented golftitles, as they'll probably pass it off as kiddie fare. However, casual videogolfers and those new to the armchair sport are in for one heck of a good timeon the links. --Joe Hon Pros: Reviews (21)
On the plus side: 1) It is the only golf game available for the dreamcast right now. 2) It is fun with two or more people 3) Even non golfers can play and understand it. 4) Did I mention it is the only golf game available for the Dreamcast presently? One the minus side: 1) You cannot hook, slice or perform any specialty shot. You can only hit the ball straight, so if you are right behind a tree you cannot get to the green. 2) This is a Japanese game "Americanized" by changing the text of the game and the language that the players speak from Japanese into English. Players will say goofy stuff that doesn't make sense. Example: One golfer will say something like "Well, at least it was close" when he holes a par putt. What the heck does that mean? Close to what? Not going in? Why would someone be happy that a putt was close to not going in? 3) You cannot turn off the speech in the game, you can only move the speech volume scale in options to the lowest setting. 4) Those big heads and Pokemany figures! Look, a game that has cutesy pie graphics can get away with it if the game has amazing detail, great playability or excellent statistics. There is none of that in this game. There is nothing special or compelling about this game that makes up for its inelegance. 5) Nonexistent statistics. Don't expect greens in regulation, number of putts, scoring average.. or anything like that in this game. 6) The game is too easy to hit a perfect shot from the fairway (all you have to do is get the shot off in a very wide section of the swing arc)and too hard to hit from the rough (often you will only be able to advance the ball 100 yards from the rough). The gameplay is silly. 7) Did I mention the big heads? Bottom line: I would call this a cutesy-pie Japanese style game that probably isn't going to satisfy a hardcore golfer. If you are a serious golfer and want a game that has real world detail and playability, this is not it. I cannot play this game in one player mode and enjoy it at all, it is a bit too simple and cute for my tastes. It is fun, however, playing this game with friends. This game did not have any of the following items that I feel a good golf game should have: I want a golf game that has realistic golfers taking realistic swings on realistic golf courses. I want detailed statistics, tournament play, leading money winner stats, knockdown shots, hook and slice shots and for goodness sake, either applause or cheering when a good shot takes place, PLEASE do not have the golfer say stuff that a Japanese programmer thinks an American player would say. The culture difference can be creepy.

Editorial Review Starting the game presents three game modes. Arcade mode is a directtranslation of the coin-operated arcade game in which you must defeatfive challengers in order to win a championship. Exhibition mode allowsyou to choose a player and then challenge any of the other availabletennis players in singles or doubles matches. World Circuit mode caststhe player as a tennis superstar, touring the world and competing forheaps of cash and worldwide rank. If you're looking to play as one of the top tennis aces in the world, you're going to be disappointed. No Sampras, Agassi, or any othertennis giants are to be found. Rather, you're stuck with 16 smallernames including Jim Courier, Carlos Moyà, and YevgenyKafelnikov. Despite the recent boom in popularity, the women's tenniscircuit is unfortunately completely absent. Sega's presentation and graphics are very well done and could almost bemistaken for a real televised match. Details such as the crowds, linejudges, and instant replays look stunning. It's a shame that VirtuaTennis doesn't feature the famous venues and tournaments of realtennis, but the game's imitation stadiums in England, New York, andFrance look close enough to be recognizable. The player graphics arefantastic. Each player displays plenty of detail in everything fromfacial expressions to sneaker logos. Like Crazy Taxi, Virtua Tennis sports a number of extras in addition to the arcade port. Included in the Dreamcast version are: arcade mode, exhibition mode, and world circuit mode. World Circuit Mode is most challenging as you travel the world taking part in trial matches earning money and buying items such as equipment or doubles' partners. Your techniques are also sharpened in various training stages such as the pin crasher, where the bowling pins must be knocked down with serves. Virtua Tennis is an intoxicating mix of speed, action and eye candy. Even if Sega had done a simple port of the arcade game, Virtua Tennis would have warranted a purchase. However, they have thrown in the extra modes to warrant a MUST buy. ... Read more

Editorial Review Armed with a glossary in the form of a user manual, players will soon be able to talk the talk. But in thisgame, walking the walk, or rather pulling the tricks, requires quite a bit of controller dexterity. Luckily thegame is not based solely on snowboarding tricks, but also has a healthy dose of racing at its core. Whatmakes this game stand out is the length and detail of each downhill course. Jumping off the roof of sheepfarms, avoiding falling icicles, and catching the spotlight of a hovering helicopter are all in a day's play inRippin' Riders--and that's just the first track! A unique two-player mode challenges players to shrink the opponent's split screen by outscoring him orher. Track graphics are up to snuff, but the players look a bit chunky. --Jeff Young Pros: Reviews (28)
The game has awesome replays. The graphics on two player mode suffer quite a bit, but game play makes up for it. Play head to head and every trick you hit takes part of your opponents screen until until your opponent can no longer see where he's going. It's pretty fun. The game is very (near extremely) difficult to master. To achieve first place rankings on the tracks you will have to have the track completely memorized and hit perfect tricks off every hit. To pull tricks is also tough to master, and landing - forget about it. I play this game every night and have unlocked maybe half off the games features. It is the first true gamers boardin game. You can't pick this game up and master it in a night or two, but when you get the hang of it there are no limits to what you can do.

Very simply, this is a fairly impressive-looking PC-based graphics demo in which you simply fly around, auto-targeting and killing enemy ships with minimal skill. That's it. There is a badly read mission background before starting, which uses the in-game graphics to show the ships you'll momentarily defeat. The graphics are in general nice as stated, but even this gloss disappears quickly. For instance, it becomes quickly evident that the background which dominates your view appears to be a 256-color bitmap, with easily discernible banding. This game represents everything that can go wrong with emphasizing graphics over gameplay.

Now that I'm mentioning ages, my wife (age 38) also loves the game, and she's downstairs playing the game now that the kids are asleep. So there is some substance here for older players as well. The game's theme is to rescue dalmation puppies from Crella DeVille. You move the puppy with either the joystick or rocker-switch over about a dozen scenes rescuing trapped puppies. You can switch between 2 puppies, but there is no real difference between the puppies. The puppy can also dig, jump, bark, and sniff, which help it complete it's task. As you finish levels, additional "mini-games" become available -- mini-golf, etc -- and stickers become available for printing. The levels come in groups of 4 it seems. On one of the levels in each group the puppy has an opponent that must be avoided. And every 4 levels there is a special "Cruella" game. So the game is simple and appealing enough for kids from 4 to 40....thus the 5 stars.
Probably a good buy if your kids are into Disney.

Editorial Review Many of the best elements of Hydro Thunder are likely to be completely bypassed by casual gamers, since there are numerous hidden tracks, boats, and other elements to be uncovered in this game. However, persistent racers will be well-rewarded, since some of the best tracks can only be unlocked after winning several races. --Brett Atwood Pros: Reviews (34)
Bad things: A lot of slowdown(espeshily in two player mode), only 13 tracks and boats,a lot of times your boat will intersect(or go through solid objects,) no different from the arcade except two player.(no added simulation or anything else to do besides just race, and it's too easy(if you didn't hear me correctly, TOO EASY)the only level I actually found hard was Venice Canals. When I beat that, I beat the game!(I've only been playing the game for 5 days.) Now that you've read my review, you can probably tell that there were more bad than good things about the game. But when I first got this game and played it, if I wrote a review then I would have given it 4 stars. I think this game is good for a rent, but I'd pass on buying it, unless you really like the game.
Perhaps the only real problem with this game is that the interface needed a little more work. If this game let you restart a track from the pause menu instead of backing all the way out to the main menu, it would have been perfect. As it is, it's an awesome, awesome arcade conversion that arcade racing fans should definitely not miss. ... Read more
