Editorial Review

This neon green and grape roller coaster is impressive in both size andscope. When fully built the coaster stretches 6 feet long and stands 3 feethigh. The directions are detailed and clear, and we had no trouble putting ittogether. It did take us a bit over five hours, though, and it's likely that anychild under 12 will need parental assistance. But assembling it is half the fun. When finished, the track careens so hazardously, it's hard to believe the carswill stay on, but they do! The plastic chain hauls the three cars up slowly, just like a real roller coaster, and the sound effects box re-creates the noiseso perfectly you'll squirm with anticipation. After reaching the top and passingthrough the serpent's mouth, the cars begin their dizzying descent past thesound effects box, which has now switched to emitting enthusiastic and terrifiedscreaming. Gravity and centrifugal force whip the little cars along the rest ofthe track until at last it reaches the beginning of the ride, only to be towedup for another round. If you don't have 6 feet of space, there are instructionsfor a smaller version, and you can turn the sound effects off if you prefer toplay quietly. Entirely worth the time and effort, this is ideal as a familyendeavor. --M. Sullivan ... Read more

This is Awesome!!!
I'm 13 years old and thought this is the best toy ever. I got kind of bored with the set that it tells you to make so I built my own. I built the new boomerang ride at Six Flags Magic Mountain called "Deja Vu". I ran out of pieces, so I love it so much that I'm going to buy another one. I think that it should come with more pieces so you can build your own coaster, but that is the only flaw in it. I think it's the best toy ever especially to roller coaster enthusiasts like me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun, but lots of work
I'd first like to say that I find the claims of other reviewers here that this toy can be assembled in 2-3 hours to be pretty unbelievable. My adult brother and I spent about 7 hours building this model, mostly working in parallel. This was our first KNEX model, but we are hardly novices at building complex toys.

I generally avoid Chinese-made toys due to their notoriously poor quality, and I was concerned about the not-completely-specified Chinese content of this model. Apparently, all of the standard KNEX parts are made in the US, and were of a very high quality plastic that snapped together nicely. It looked like only the electrical components (motor and sound box) and the train were made in China (and were of noticeably poorer quality plastic).

The actual construction process was a lot of fun. My only complaint here was that some parts of the manual dealing with the track support system were difficult to reproduce exactly, and failing to exactly reproduce this left us with a track fit problem. We finally had to fudge and use an unspecified part to make the track support work.

After construction, very little tweaking was required to get the model working as advertised. As other reviewers have noted, the model moves a lot when in use. This was resolved easily by building the model on a piece of pegboard and using a few strategic tie-wraps to hold it in place.

My major complaint: the motor assembly. It has a small, difficult to operate power switch. To make matters worse, it's apparently a generic KNEX motor module, and the power switch also has a "reverse" setting which, when accidentally activated while trying to turn the model on or off, can cause the model to jam (and possibly even cause damage).

Once the construction process is completed, this is not much of a "hands on" toy. There's really nothing you can "do" with it other than watch the train go round and round. The actual "ride" from the top of the lift to the bottom is only 2-3 seconds long.

5-0 out of 5 stars This toy is awesome!!!
Its definately worth the 90.00 bucks that you spend on it cause it is VERY fun to build and even more fun to play with...The only thing is that you have to know and use your imagination to be able to build this thing cause it can be pretty hard in some spots...but never the less awesome!I'm 13 and built this in a Day in a half(took alot longer than most people)but I had fun doing it.If you do order this item TAKE YOUR TIME on it and don't rush it cause I did that and I had to start all over cause I couldn't figure out where I was at on building it.so I hope this review helped you and if you liked this try building the other knex theme park rides such as other rollercoasters and the ferris wheel.

The Screamin Serpent Rollor coaster rocks !!!
This toy is amazing and very entertaining. It is just a little complicated by with a little help it looks awsome. One of the best parts about it is that if you dont' like the the way the instructions tell you to build it you can build your own. You can have your own mini millenium force if you choose to in your own house. If I was to rate this out of five I would give it a four and a half. The only little flaw is that the instructions are a little hard to understand.

screamin serpant roller coaster
my son has one and it isnt extremly hard but slightly difficult to build. it has been almost a year and he still hasnt fixed all the bugs! some problems were bad design, track shortage and when the car goes through the loop sometimes it doesent go over the small hill or get a head start on the chain lift. I think that after awhile it gets boring and takes up too much room and money. ... Read more

You might never stop building once you get your hands on the 50-model building set from K'NEX. This super value set includes pieces to build over 50 moving machines, creatures, and rides, plus a bonus battery-powered motor to set the models in motion. A 225-page instruction manual features step-by-step instructions for three levels of building: friendly, moderate, and greater, depending on your child’s age and skill level. The color-coded rod-and-connector system and visual instructions make construction simple while teaching hand-eye coordination and planning skills, as kids build everything from a sea turtle to a racing car. The set's sturdy components can also be combined creatively to form unique original structures and designs, and are compatible with other K'NEX systems. When it's time to put them away, all the pieces fit nicely into the 17-by-12-by-6-inch blue plastic box with handle. Requires two AA batteries (not included) to operate the motor. --N. Mered ... Most played with toy we own
My 7 year old son got this set for Christmas last year, and with all the toys we have for our 5 kids, this K'nex set gets the most use. He built with it every day for months, and still builds something new about every week with it. He has built about every model in the book and he is getting better at building his own ideas. We've gotten a lot of the models on video tape, and he loves to show his grandparents the new ones. I loved the sea turtle that "walked" across the floor, and he builds amusement park rides and puts little people in them. This thing keeps him busy for hours at a time, and he's getting another tub of them for his birthday. His little brother wants one for his birthday this year. The motor is very cool, and he figures out how to use it with the models that don't call for it. Since Christmas, he has only broken 2 pieces, so I thought that was pretty good. Highly recommended!

I love K'NEX
I have had a KNEX set for 10 years or so. My daughter has always been envious of mine, and I don't let the kids play with it. She received money for christmas and bought this set. She has had a lot of fun putting together the models, however there are a couple of models in the book that there aren't quite enough pieces to build. If this were the only set in the house, it would be very disappointing to get as far as she did, then have to disassemble and start with another project. ... Read more

OK........................
When I Started on this Ferris Wheel i had no idea how big it would realy be! it took me at least a hour and a half to comppleat this ferris wheel by my self "whith a lot of years under my belt". when it was done i did have some trouble with th emoter but it was fine. ADVICE- DO NOT connect the controller to the inside when building the swings, My Cuz did it and broke the peices becuse everytime u wanted to shut it off you would have to stop the ride with your hand.

Fun Toy
I worked on this with my mom and my two sisters (9 and 5). It took me the whole day to finish it. When my mom and sisters took a break, I just kept going!. This toy was so fun i coulnd't stop. I was determined to finished. Finally I did and now i don't want to take it apart. I built the "Boom Ride". I had trouble with the motor because you need to do it a little diferently from the directions, and need to hold it in place for the first couple of tries. It's kindof hard to put the chairs together, but its alot of fun.

Great fun!
This is a great set of models to build. My 11 year old daughter worked on this for several hours with her cousins (12 and 16 year old boys). Once they were done, they took it apart and built it again. Several months later, the box was opened up and built again. This much more manageable to build than the large roller coaster set that takes a lot more perserverance. ... Read more

Interesting, good for dexterity
I bought this as a change of pace to Duplo blocks, which my 3-yr-old daughter plays with every day. The kit is fairly small, so it would seem that there are few things to create with it. Not so! She makes everything from satellites to lollipops and bouquets of flowers. She was initially interested in the "creature" creations but now finds the challenge of snapping the pieces into limitless combinations engaging. We found that creating the creatures was difficult, since the "feet" and "eyes" are oddly weighted and often cause your creature to be unable to stand. A child with better understanding of weights and balances will have more fun making creatures.

Pros: it takes some dexterity and even hand strength to snap the pieces together. It has a nice, compact case with a handle. K'Nex teaches another kind of connection than the standard block. The abstract nature of these kits really engages kids' imagination.

Cons: A few of the pieces are a choking hazard to anyone under three. Even the long "sticks" could prove disastrous to a child that is unable to resist mouthing and running around. You child may need your help a lot in the beginning until they get the hang of how the pieces attach to each other.

Great Toy
I purchased this for my 4 yr old daughter before going on a trip to keep her busy and this was the only toy she played with the entire time. This was over two months ago and every day she is still playing with this set and building something new. We are amazed at her creativity and the complexity of her designs. I plan on including this on my gift giving list. It is the best toy buy we have made in quite a while.

Best quiet-time toy in the house
This is a truly amazing toy. Both of our boys (3 and 5) play with our sets (we have several) almost every day and it never bores them. I have been most impressed with the way even the younger boy is able to follow the included directions to build really fun toys, almost without any help from us. He has now progressed to inventing his own toys, which are increasingly complex and three dimensional. Including eyes, feet, ears, wheels and propellers was inspired--it allows kids to make animals, people and "space aliens" to play with. Our only problem with the sets are that the boys don't like to put them away, and with so many small pieces picking up is essential. This is also one of our favorite birthday presents for other kids.

Amazing
My child loves a ton of toys, but this one inspires him. The only problem is that he has gotten in trouble for not being able to take his mind off of them long enough to eat breakfast. He's not terrific with small motor skills but he can handle these, he can follow the directions because of the colored pieces and their distinctive shapes and the eyes seem to make them even more interesting. It's as if he is making a small friend. Then, he started making objects outside of the directions and there's no stopping him.

Love this toy!
My son received this set for his 3rd birthday and just loved it. He and his brother play for hours with the pieces, building everything in the manual they give and anything they can think of. Now that my son is turning 4, he is getting more sets so he can build even more things! ... Read more

another one duped by the missing motor
From a parent of 2 boys (7 and 11) who love playing with KNEX. We bought this for our son for x-mas (prior to the reviews listed above being posted) and read the description stating it came with a battery powered motor. Just what our son needed to go with his other k nex sets. When it arrived, there was no motor nor did the packaging reference one. reality is that we were duped into believing it was something it was not. As a basic Knex set it lacks as compared to the others also.

Disappointed
Our children have two other sets and we were excited to give them one with a motor. We are VERY disappointed, this set is advertised as having a motor, but it does not. It is just a plain set like the two we already have. I too feel ripped off.

The beauty of this radio-controlled vehicle is that you assemble it yourself with snap-together pieces. The vehicle can be assembled in any number of different ways, including a dune buggy shape and a scorpion. The great thing about this is that, since you need to build it before you can play, it engages your child actively in the process. This is not the "Here I am now, entertain me" experience that you find with most toys. In the course of assembling the car, you (or your kid) will learn the rudiments of how a steering system works, since no matter how creative you want to get with the rest of the vehicle, the steering has to be hooked up properly for the thing to work. This dragster comes in two frequencies, 27 MHz and 49 MHz, so if you want to get two and race them, you can do so without the signals conflicting. Requires one 9-volt battery and eight AAs (also compatible with a 9.6-volt rechargeable battery system). --David Stoesz ... Read more

Not too much fun
I bought this for my 10 yr old grandson and he was completely lost putting a million pieces together. After 3 hours on the kitchen table we finally got it outside to run and it crashed into a million pieces. He left, I put the pieces back into the box and he hasn't touched it since. I'm not too impressed with this toy.

its pretty cool-
the dragster is fun to build, as well as the other 2 models and many other designes that you could think up and create. the steering is a very wide with the dragster model, but hey, if you're outside you have all the space you want to turn and race around. this toy's pieces are durable beyond demand, and after putting it together, it may break due to a hard crash, but the car can easily be snapped back together. pieces/motor/steering compatible with other sets ... Christmas present that doesn't stay in the closet
My 4-year-old has enjoyed these so much. He has the Roving Rollers and the Building Buddies sets. He can look at the pictures in the "building book" and make many of them all by himself. He has created his own "mosquito" and "cartwheel man" with help from his big sister, who is almost seven, and loves these toys, too. This is the kind of toy that will not end up in the bottom of the closet!!!

Wow--A Toy the Kid Will Play With
Legos, Duplos, Ello.. they don't hold a candle to the Kid Knex in the series. Unbelieveable how much our 6 year old daughter plays with these and our 3 YO son too. These have a good feel for kids too. Bright. Easy to use. We have all in set now. BRING ON SOME MORE!

FABULOUS!! (3 1/2 year old loves it!!!)
Comes with great "directions" - a booklet simply depicting many ways to build creatures (by just showing pictures of completed creatures). Our son could easily replicates these creatures and is really into it! Considering the many toys he has, this is a unique one which he plays with again and again! :)

It has to have Eyes
Kid K'Nex makes weird abstract ... things. This was my sons first Kid Knex piece, and now we have the whole series. Thing tinkertoy stick figures with eyes. Then be amazed how a toddler assembles them in ways you didnt think possible. ... Read more

Teacher Review

K'NEX building sets have been used in classrooms for years, but theseopen-ended construction sets are also worthwhile for playtime at home or forhomeschool use. This set focuses on building models of different transportationvehicles for land, air, sea, and space travel, using the 800 plasticconstruction pieces that include rods, connectors, tires, pulleys/hubs, andthree motors. Activity cards with construction diagrams for 44 different modelsare included, along with a 56-page teacher's guide with 168 activity suggestionsand background information. Some of the models are quite simple (a hang glider)and some are complex (a space shuttle), so the set can be used by children ofvarying abilities and ages (from 5 to 10). Kids who are drawn to constructionsets will of course enjoy this set, but parents might also consider it as a funand educational way to improve spatial reasoning skills in kids who aren't somechanically minded. --Marcie Bovetz, mother and former children'slibrarian ... Greatest Toy Ever
I think that this is a really great toy, but it is only for adults, because i think that it is slightly dangerous if not used properly.

Not just for you 16 and up age group
I was recently browsing around looking for some new knex building set when i saw the roller coaster for physics and educational purposes. I just wanted to say that the age limit for that set is discouraging. They do sell the roller coaster by itself and that in itself is an educational experience. I was 12 when i built the roller coaster i got. I am 16 now. Im sure this set is good for learning but im sure you can get the same thing out of the plain roller coaster set. it took me one day to build and i am still learning from it. I am constantly doing different things to it that improove it each time. You catch on easily to the concept of physics and how to make the car go faster or how to make it slow and not derail. This set is a very good experience even for younger children. I also recommend the Big Ball Factory and The Trampolene set. These sets are very educational and will boost any childs curiosity. ... Love this Toy!!
My 5 yr.old son and 3 yr.old dd, love these, they have all the different types and I dumped them all in a tote with the books and they play with them that way, It's very easy to make the different things out of the books, we have lots of fun with them, I just wish they would come out with a bigger container full of them in the big plastic form. just so that we don't have all the cases laying around.
We got one for a gift for one of his friends and they loved it too. Would recommend to anyone with small kids.

better than legos
I wish I had known about Knex sooner. We just bought the Rovin Rollers but I anticipate buying more in the series. I like legos and it's nice that there are versions of legos that a young child can use. However, with legos, a young child (say 4 and under) can't really do anything interesting with them other than make stacks and bigger stacks. With Knex, they can put together 3 or 4 pieces and have something interesting with an eyeball or wheel. Some of the parts are prebuilt to make building go quicker. There is also a book which gives you ideas of things to make. I found myself playing with this!

Yes. There are small parts but I just keep an eye on my 2.5 yr olds. They have yet to put the small pieces in their mouth but did once chew on a bigger piece.

Yes. As another reviewer said, I wish it had a bigger case. A parent has to pack it and pack it carefully or it won't close. That said, it is a nice sturdy case and has held up well to my kids sitting and standing on it.

Worth every penny!

A Hit with my Nephew!!
As most of you are aware, some children seem to have every toy ever made! Well, my almost 6 yr old nephew is in that category and I wanted to get him something for Christmas and his upcoming Birthday that was educational, fun and something he didn't already have! As someone who doesn't have children of my own, I put a lot of stock in reviews from parents about the toys their children have. Based on the positive reviews for this and other K'nex toys and the fact he loves building things I decided to give this a try.

Well, the reviews didn't disappoint! Our family celebrated Christmas this past weekend and and it was a total hit! He sat and played with this until it was time for him to go home. (I sat there for at least an hour myself "helping" him!) I'm sure he will eventually get around to playing with the other toys he got that day, but it made me happy to know the one I'd picked out was the chosen one! I can hardly wait to send him the K'Nex Anniversary Tub I've gotten him for his Birthday in February.

The toy seems very durable and offers many ways for a child to use his imagination. I will say based on reading the previous reviews I was a bit worried about getting the parts back into the carrier. After his mother figured out the large parts needed to go in first, it was really a breeze.

If you have a child who enjoys building things, I highly recommend this toy.

The Kid Knex series for 3-7 year olds is a hit!
The Rollin Rovers, Bug Eyed Buddies, Footed Friends, and the ... ones that come in a Lego Bionicle-like container are worth the money. My four year old son got all of them (some duplicates) and they are all in a bin together for more creativity. Even his older siblings 7 and 9 like to play this. Great hand-eye coordination. The cases are ok, but difficult for the age to use, so we dumped them in a bin with easy lid for him. Great idea for the age group to get them interested in older Lego and Kinex building projects/toys.

4-0 out of 5 stars We have loved it
We got this for my sons last birthday, when he turned 4. He has really loved it. He builds all sorts of things. It really allows room for creativity. I have given the kid k'nex sets to other kids his age for their birthdays and have gotten lots of big thank yous from the moms. I also have a 2 yr daughter and she likes to play with this toy too. I think it is a great toy for the money. And the different sets really get your kids making something new to play with. ... Read more

FUN FUN FUN
This toy is probably one of the best in the current zekorian line. All three modes look good. However, I've had trouble with the launching disks. While fun, the tail can sometimes come off while shooting so I suggest you hold the tail near the front if you are going to launch. If you get this toy, take my advice and go to the website! It will give you a much better idea on how a ten-foot dragonfly can grow legs and launch disks. There is even an on-line multiplayer game! ...

This much more manageable to build than the large roller coaster set that takes a lot more perserverance. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Arcade games, while exciting for a while, can get a little old if played too much. Not so with this set from K'NEX. Follow the instructions in the enclosed book to build arcade games out of the baseboard and abundant parts. Then, when you're ready for a new challenge, reconfigure the board to create an entirely new game. The instructions are helpful in getting started but we had the most fun creating our own quirky versions, as the kit alternated between being an arcade game and a construction set. Games can be set up for one or two players. --John Moe ... Read more

Works alright
I am 13 years of age, but this machine is still fun for me. Yet I found it hard to assemble it because I had to keep bending over. There are miniature flaws in this classic arcade game, but those are fixable. This also works great with custom designs on the board. If you are a previous collector of K'nex, then I highly suggest this excellent game for you.

GREAT
Son loved it. Had a good time putting it together

Pleased with purchase
After reading other reviews we purchased at the special closeout price on Amzaon. We didn't have any of the problems some others had. The pinball works better than I expected, and other than assisting a 8 year old on a few of the more complicated steps it went together and works very well for a built pinball machine. The only minor problem we had is with the light card board piece that is more decoration than any practical use, which gives the baord the pinball look. It doesn't stay flat due to being folded in the box but a few pieces of tape will take care of it. Get used more than roller costers or ferris wheel after built.

Excellent Knex Set!!
I just turned 12 years old and my parents got this for me for Christmas. I think it is one of the best Knex sets there is. I built pinball and I have not had any trouble with it. It is REALLY sturdy. I turned my back and my baby sister crawled on it and was sitting on the platform and did not come apart. If you can build the Screamin' Serpeant you can build this with no problem. Just make sure you double check each part so that it is put together correct.

Very disappointed
Bought this for my 10 year son who is a big K'nex fan. It was very difficult to assemble. The weight of the platform caused it to collapse during construction. Once we finally completed it it was difficult to play with as every other flip of the flipper caused it to collapse again and again. I was so dissapointed in this product that I actually returned it. ... Read more

This is the fun set for sparking creativity
The instruction booklet is very detailed and comes in several languages. There are three levels for the models to build and they range from friendly, moderate to greater challenge. My son has made nine of these models.

The rods and connectors snap into one another and are built according to the color-coded instructions. Joel Glickman is the inventor of K'Nex and has an easy to understand format in the directions, plus you do not need to read much to follow the diagrams. This set is ideal for the beginner who is new to this building system. My son was familiar with this from watching commercials.

The pieces have names, rods, connectors, spacers and flexi-rods. The connectors are blue and purple, and nice shades. The instructions are numbered for each step to follow along. The flexi-rods are orange with the spaces being blue and silver.

Scissors, hang glider, lawn mower, spy plane, canoe, cell phone, space shuttle, fly & swatter, clawing crab and the front-end loader.

There are very small round pieces that are dangerous to have around if there are smaller children or pets in the home. This might be best utilized on a table and when not in use place all loose pieces back in case.

My son has spent many hours this past month exploring with these models and making things that are not even listed and tells me all the time how he is using his imagination.

The models are able to stand in an upright position, they can move and bend in positions and they come in various sizes and portable. ... Read more
